If you support a spouse, partner or family member who has a physical or mental condition, you may pay less income tax. You claim the Canada caregiver credit on your tax return. ▸ Who can get this? • You support your spouse or common-law partner with a mental or physical infirmity, or • A family member depends on you for food, shelter and clothing because of an infirmity. This can be a child, grandchild, parent, grandparent, brother, sister, aunt, uncle, niece or nephew (yours or your partner's). Some of these relatives must have lived in Canada at some time in the year. ▸ What you get • A lower tax bill. This credit is non-refundable, so it only reduces tax you owe. • The amount depends on who you support and their income. ▸ How to apply 1. Fill in Schedule 5 of your tax return. 2. Enter the amounts on the lines that apply to you. 3. File your tax return. ▸ What you need • Don't send documents when you file. Keep them in case the CRA asks. • The CRA may ask for a signed statement from a medical practitioner. It says when the condition started and how long it will last. ▸ Good to know • You don't need the medical statement if the CRA already approved a Disability Tax Credit form (T2201) for that person.
