If you live in BC and need help paying for child care, you may get a monthly payment from the BC government. How much you get depends on your income, your family size and the type of care. ▸ Who can get this? • You live in BC and have a current BC address. • You are a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, Convention refugee or protected person. • You need child care because you work, go to school, are in a job program, are looking for work (only one parent or guardian), or have a medical condition that makes it hard to care for your child. A social worker referral also counts. • Families earning up to about $111,000 a year may qualify. Larger families, or families with children who have support needs, may qualify with more income. ▸ What you get • A monthly payment toward your child care costs. Most types of care count, not only licensed care. • Families with lower income can get the most. For licensed care, that is adjusted yearly income up to $45,000. • If your child has support needs, you may get up to $150 more a month. • Use the Affordable Child Care Benefit Estimator on the BC government website to see how much you may get. ▸ How to apply 1. Find a child care provider. 2. Fill out the Child Care Arrangement form (CF2798) with your provider. 3. Apply online through My Family Services, or by mail or fax. 4. Upload your documents within 60 days of starting your application. 5. Online applications take about 10 business days. Mail or fax can take 3 weeks or more. ▸ What you need • One piece of government ID for each person in your family (for example a birth certificate, passport, BC Services Card or Status card) • Social Insurance Number (SIN) for you and your spouse • Proof of your reason for care, like a work schedule or school timetable • A Medical Condition form, if that is your reason for care ▸ Good to know • Apply by the end of the month you need care. For care starting September 1, apply by September 30. • You must renew every year. Renew 30 days before your plan ends. • Missing documents are the most common cause of delays. • Not covered: unlicensed care by a family member who lives with you, drop-in care, occasional care and recreational care. • Maternity or parental leave is not a reason for care. • You can get help applying in person at Child Care Resource and Referral Centres, immigrant settlement agencies and Service BC offices.
