If you live with a severe disability and need help with money or health costs, BC disability assistance may help. You first need Persons with Disabilities (PWD) approval. PWD is BC's disability approval. ▸ Who can get this? • You are 18 or older. You can start applying at 17½. • You have a severe physical or mental impairment expected to last more than 2 years. • It greatly limits your daily activities. • You need help from a person, a device or an assistance animal. • You meet the income and asset limits. Assets are usually limited to $100,000 ($200,000 if both adults have PWD). Your home, one vehicle and an RDSP do not count. ▸ What you get • Up to $1,483.50 a month if you are single (rates since December 2025). • Up to $2,662 a month for a couple who both have PWD and no children. • A $52 transportation supplement, in cash or as a bus pass. • Other supplements, such as health, dental and optical help. You must get approval before you buy. • You can earn up to $16,200 in 2026 (single) without your payment going down. ▸ How to apply 1. Apply for assistance on My Self Serve (myselfserve.gov.bc.ca). 2. Ask the Ministry for a PWD application. 3. Fill in your part. 4. Your doctor or nurse practitioner fills in the medical part. 5. A professional, like a doctor, nurse or social worker, fills in the assessor part. ▸ Good to know • There is a shorter PWD form if you get help from Community Living BC (CLBC), the At Home Program, PharmaCare Plan P or CPP Disability. • Your doctor should not charge you for the PWD form. • Free help applying: Disability Alliance BC, 1-800-663-1278 or advocacy@dabc.ca.
