If your family has a low income, the government can put up to $2,000 into your child's education savings. You don't have to put in any money yourself. ▸ Who can get this? • Your child was born on or after January 1, 2004. • Your child lives in Canada and has a SIN. • Your child is named in a Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP). • The main caregiver files taxes and can get the Canada Child Benefit (CCB). • Family income is low. For July 2026 to June 2027, that means $58,523 or less for 1 to 3 children. ▸ What you get • $500 in the first year, then $100 each year up to age 15. • Up to $2,000 per child in total. • The money can pay for school after high school, like college, university or trades. ▸ How to apply 1. Get your child a SIN. 2. Open an RESP at a bank or other provider. 3. Ask the provider to apply for the CLB. ▸ Good to know • The CLB is retroactive. You can still get missed years. • A caregiver can ask for it until the day before the child turns 18. • From 18, the young person can apply until the day before they turn 21. • From April 2028, children born in 2024 or later who qualify will get an RESP opened automatically.
