If you worked in Canada and paid into the Canada Pension Plan (CPP), you can get a monthly pension when you retire. It is paid for the rest of your life. ▸ Who can get this? • You are at least 60. • You made at least one valid CPP contribution. This can come from work, or from credits from a former spouse or partner. ▸ What you get • A monthly payment based on what you paid in. It is taxable. • Standard start age is 65. You can start as early as 60 or as late as 70. • Start early: smaller payments (up to 36% less at 60). Start later: bigger payments (up to 42% more at 70). • In 2026 the most you can get at 65 is $1,507.65 a month. Most people get less. ▸ How to apply 1. Choose your start date. 2. Apply up to 12 months before that date. 3. Apply online in My Service Canada Account (MSCA), or by mail with form ISP-1000. ▸ What you need • Your SIN. • Your banking details for direct deposit. • If you lived or worked in another country: the country, your insurance number there, and dates. ▸ Good to know • You must apply. It does not start on its own. • Online, expect a decision within 28 days. By mail, within 120 days. • If you get CPP disability, it changes to a retirement pension at 65 automatically. • Working while on CPP does not lower your pension.
