If you are 65 or older, get Old Age Security (OAS), and have a low income, you can get extra money each month. This is the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS). It is tax-free. ▸ Who can get this? • You are 65 or older and get the OAS pension. • You live in Canada. • You are not under a sponsorship agreement. • Your yearly income is under the limit. For example, under $23,112 if you are single, widowed or divorced (October to December 2026 table). ▸ What you get • Up to $1,138.90 a month if you are single, widowed or divorced (October to December 2026). • Less if you have a spouse or partner. The amount depends on your income. ▸ How to apply 1. Most people are enrolled automatically. You will get a letter around your 64th birthday. 2. If the letter asks you to apply, or you never got one, contact Service Canada. 3. Apply online in My Service Canada Account (MSCA), or by mail. Use form ISP-3025 if you already get OAS. ▸ What you need • Your SIN and birth date, and your spouse's or partner's if you have one. • Where you have lived since age 18. • Any drop in work or pension income in the last 2 years. • Your banking details. ▸ Good to know • File your taxes every year. If you don't, your GIS may stop or go down. • Your amount is recalculated each July, based on last year's income. • Amounts change every 3 months. Check the payment amounts page.
