If you are in need and have no other way to pay for basics, BC income assistance (sometimes called welfare) can give you money each month. ▸ Who can get this? • You are out of work, or you don't earn enough for basic needs • You are waiting for other money to arrive • You can't work at all • You urgently need food, shelter or medical care You must use all your other income and assets first. ▸ What you get • A monthly payment based on your family size • MSP coverage and PharmaCare for prescriptions with no deductible Check the "On assistance" page for current amounts. ▸ How to apply 1. Apply online with My Self Serve (myselfserve.gov.bc.ca). 2. If you can't apply online, call or visit an office. 3. Most people must look for work for three weeks first. 4. A worker then checks your information, in person or by phone. ▸ What you need • ID for you and your family • Your Social Insurance Number (SIN) • Your rent and utility costs, and your bank balance • A copy of your tenancy agreement if you rent ▸ Good to know • You may not need a work search if you are fleeing abuse, are a single parent of a child under 3, are 65 or older, or have a health condition that stops you looking for work. • If you are not eligible but still in need, ask about hardship assistance. • You can ask for a reconsideration if you disagree with a decision. • Offices: 405 Highway 33 West, Kelowna, and 3685 Hoskins Rd, West Kelowna.
