If you get income assistance, disability assistance or hardship assistance and you have a confirmed job offer, BC may pay for things you need to start that job. ▸ What it can pay for • Safety gear, like work gloves, goggles and safety work boots • Work clothes, like uniforms, rain gear and rubber boots • Tools your employer doesn't normally provide • A haircut • Transportation to the job, like a bus pass ▸ Who can get this? • You get income, disability or hardship assistance • You have a confirmed job that will let your family leave assistance • You need the item to start work, and you have no other way to pay for it ▸ Good to know • Ask WorkBC first. If WorkBC can pay for the item, you get it from WorkBC instead. • Bring a job offer letter with the employer's name, address, phone number and a contact person. • It is usually a one-time payment, but it can be given again (for example for seasonal work). • If you don't take the job, there may be a penalty on your assistance. • It does not pay for moving, training, or tools the employer normally gives you.
