If you get care from your health authority's Home Care or Mental Health and Substance Use program, BC Hydro may give you a free portable air conditioner. It can help keep you safe in extreme heat. ▸ Who can get this? • You are a current client of your regional health authority's Home Care Program or Mental Health and Substance Use (MHSU) program. Here, that is Interior Health. • Your program gives you a recommendation letter. A note from your family doctor is not accepted. • You do not already have a working air conditioner. If yours is completely broken, you may still qualify. • You live in a house, townhome, apartment or condo, rowhome, duplex, or manufactured or mobile home. • You can rent. Your landlord must sign BC Hydro's consent form. ▸ What you get • One portable air conditioner. It sits on wheels, plugs into a wall outlet and vents through a window. • One-time installation in your home. • No fees or shipping costs. ▸ How to apply 1. Ask your Home Care or MHSU worker for a recommendation letter. 2. If you rent, have your landlord fill out the landlord consent form. 3. Apply online. If you can't apply online, call BC Hydro for help. 4. BC Hydro will tell you within a few weeks if you are approved. 5. A contractor will call you to book a time to install it. ▸ What you need • The recommendation letter from your program • The landlord consent form, if you rent ▸ Good to know • Not everyone in these programs gets a letter. It is up to your clinician. • You cannot join Home Care or MHSU just to get a letter. • Winter pause: if you apply on or after October 1, 2026, installation waits until April 2027. • Units are first come, first served while funding lasts. • After it is installed, you look after it. You take it down and put it back up each season. • The unit is only for your main home. You cannot sell it. • If FortisBC supplies your electricity, apply through FortisBC instead.
