If you are enrolled in MSP in B.C., many diabetes medicines, birth control and menopause hormone medicines are free at the pharmacy. This is BC PharmaCare's National Pharmacare plan (Plan NP). It started March 1, 2026. ▸ Who can get this? • You live in B.C. and are enrolled in MSP (the Medical Services Plan) • Your prescription is filled at a B.C. pharmacy If you applied for MSP and it is not active yet, a pharmacist can help you get coverage in the meantime. ▸ What you get • Diabetes: insulins, metformin, glyburide, gliclazide, dapagliflozin, empagliflozin and more are fully covered. A few others need Special Authority (an approval your prescriber asks for first). • Birth control: most birth control pills, IUDs (hormonal and copper), the implant, vaginal rings, the injection, and emergency contraception • Menopause hormone therapy (once called HRT): pills, gels, patches and vaginal estrogen Most are free. A few are only partly covered. A pharmacist can often switch you to a fully covered version. ▸ How to get it 1. Bring your prescription and BC Services Card to a B.C. pharmacy. 2. The pharmacist fills it. For fully covered items, you pay nothing. You don't need to register or send receipts. Insulin and emergency contraception do not need a prescription. ▸ Good to know • Plan NP costs do not count toward your Fair PharmaCare deductible. • Since April 1, 2026, PharmaCare also covers more diabetes supplies and devices. • The PharmaCare help line has interpreters in over 140 languages.
