If you are a First Nations person who was taken from your home by child welfare between 1991 and 2022, you may be able to get money from a court-approved settlement. Parents and grandparents who were caring for the child may also be able to claim. It is free to claim. You do not need a lawyer. ▸ Who can get this? Right now, claims are open for two groups: • Removed Child: You are First Nations. While you were under 19 (in BC), child welfare removed you from your home between April 1, 1991 and March 31, 2022. You, or a parent or grandparent caring for you, lived on reserve or in the Yukon. Indigenous Services Canada paid for your placement. The reason for removal does not matter. • Removed Child Family: You are the parent or grandparent who was living with and caring for that child when the child was first removed. Biological, adoptive parents and First Nations stepparents can count. Not included: Métis or Inuit children, foster parents, and brothers, sisters or cousins (unless they adopted the child). A parent or grandparent who committed abuse that led to the child's removal is not eligible. Claims for the other groups in the settlement will open later. ▸ How to apply 1. Pick the right Claim Form. Form A is for a Removed Child. Form C is for a caregiving parent or grandparent. Forms B and D are for someone claiming for a person who has died. 2. Fill it out online in the Claims Portal, or download the PDF. 3. Send it online, or by mail, fax or email. 4. Every person sends their own claim. If you fit both groups, send a separate form for each. ▸ What you need • Your current mailing address • Government ID (send a clear copy of both sides, never the original) • A bank account, if you want direct deposit • Caregiving parents and grandparents: details about the child's removal (date, and where and with whom the child was placed) • Proof you can act for someone, if you claim for a person who has died or cannot manage their own affairs ▸ Good to know • Deadline: If you were an adult on March 10, 2025, you have until March 10, 2028 at 11:59 p.m. PT. You can ask for a 1-year extension. • Young people can claim within 2 years before turning 19 (in BC). After that, you have 3 years. • Free Claims Helpers can help you fill out the form and get ID. Call the Administrator at 1-833-852-0755, choose your language and press 2. • Age of majority depends on where you live now (19 in BC). • Beware of fake emails. Only use fnchildclaims.ca. Never share personal information online. • Free mental health support, 24 hours a day: Hope for Wellness Helpline, 1-855-242-3310. • Children and youth can call Kids Help Phone at 1-800-668-6868, or text FIRSTNATIONS to 686868.
