BC PharmaCare pays for most prescription contraceptives for any BC resident enrolled in MSP. ▸ What is covered • Most prescription birth control pills • IUDs (hormonal and copper) • Hormonal implant • Hormonal vaginal ring • Contraceptive injection • Emergency contraception (no prescription needed) ▸ How to get it 1. Get a prescription from a doctor, nurse practitioner, midwife or pharmacist. Pharmacists can prescribe contraceptives. 2. Bring the prescription and your Personal Health Number to a pharmacy. 3. Pay nothing for fully covered products. ▸ Good to know • Some products are only partly covered. Ask the pharmacist to change it to a free equivalent. • For emergency contraception, ask the pharmacist how to get it free (the Plan B brand is only partly covered). • If you applied for MSP and it is not active yet, a pharmacist can help you get exceptional coverage. • IUDs and implants need a visit to a doctor or clinic to be inserted. • Not covered: condoms, cervical caps, diaphragms, patches or sponges. • PharmaCare help desk: 1-800-663-7100 (help in over 140 languages).
