Family Decision Making (FDM) — Okanagan Nation Alliance: by phone. Who it's for: Syilx Nation families and individuals; families involved in or at risk with MCFD child protection; all Indigenous people, urban and reserve….
Categories: Family, Indigenous
Family Decision Making is a voluntary, confidential process where a child's family, community and supports come together in a circle to make a plan for the child's safety and wellbeing. It respects Syilx and Indigenous ways and can often help families avoid going to court. ▸ Who can use it? • Syilx Nation families and individuals • Families involved with, or at risk of being involved with, MCFD child protection • All Indigenous people, urban and on reserve, including Métis, in the Syilx Okanagan territory ▸ How it works: • An independent FDM Coordinator (not part of the Band, Friendship Centre or MCFD) explains the process and your options. • The circle opens in a good way, shares family strengths and concerns, then the family builds a plan. • Where MCFD is involved, their social workers are asked to support the family's plan. ▸ How to access: • You can refer yourself. Referrals also come from Bands, Friendship Centres, MCFD, schools and Métis associations. • Call the FDM Lead at 250-878-4085 or email FDM.Lead@syilx.org
