CNIB Guide Dogs raises, trains and matches guide dogs with Canadians who are blind or partially sighted. ▸ Who can apply: you are 16 or older (younger people can start the process), you have sight loss that limits your orientation and mobility, you are physically able to care for a dog, you have a safe home, and you are a registered client of CNIB or Vision Loss Rehabilitation Canada. ▸ How to apply (7 steps): online application → eye report, health form and 3 references → orientation and mobility (O&M) assessment → in-home assessment → eligibility confirmed → match → team training (in a hotel or at home). ▸ Wait time: CNIB says demand has grown and the wait is longer than they would like. They suggest you also apply to other guide dog schools. ▸ After one year working well together, CNIB transfers ownership of the guide dog to you. ▸ CNIB also has Buddy Dogs (pets for children or youth with sight loss) and career change dogs for adoption. ▸ Contact: 1-800-563-2642 or guidedogs@cnib.ca
