The McVitie Veterinary Assistance Program helps low-income people in BC pay for emergency vet care. An emergency means your pet is at risk of dying, or would need to be put down, without treatment. Decisions are made case by case with a vet. ▸ Who can apply? You must: • Live in British Columbia • Show proof of low income, and be unable to pay all or some of the cost with savings or credit • Have a pet who needs care right away to save their life • Apply BEFORE treatment • Give your pet's history and photos • Ask only once a year for up to two pets, and twice in each pet's lifetime • Follow the vet's aftercare directions Apply separately for each pet. ▸ What to know: • Funding is not guaranteed. Money goes straight to the vet clinic. • You may need a payment plan with the clinic for the rest of the bill. • They do not pay for private cremation or paw prints. • Response times are longer than usual right now. ▸ How to apply: Fill in the online application on their website. ▸ Contact: • Phone: 604-336-1390 (voicemail only) • Email: mcvitie@vancouverhumanesociety.bc.ca • Staff usually work Monday to Friday, 9 am to 4 pm. No decisions on weekends or statutory holidays. ▸ Pet emergency after hours? Call the BC SPCA Animal Helpline at 1-855-622-7722, or a local vet. In Kelowna, the program's list of after-hours vets includes Fairfield Animal Hospital: 250-860-6550.
