If you can't work because you are sick, injured or in quarantine, EI sickness benefits can pay part of your wages for up to 26 weeks. ▸ Who can get this? • You can't work for medical reasons. • Your weekly pay dropped by more than 40% for at least 1 week. • You worked 600 insured hours in the 52 weeks before your claim (or since your last claim, if shorter). ▸ What you get • Up to 26 weeks of payments. • 55% of your earnings, up to $729 a week. ▸ How to apply 1. Ask your employer if they have paid sick leave first. 2. Get a medical certificate from your doctor or other treating health professional. 3. Apply online as soon as you stop working. It takes about 1 hour. 4. Upload your certificate in My Service Canada Account (MSCA) if asked. ▸ What you need • A medical certificate saying you can't work and for about how long. • Your SIN, banking details, and employers from the last 52 weeks. ▸ Good to know • Apply within 4 weeks of your last day of work, or you may lose benefits. • Your provider may charge a fee for the certificate. EI does not pay it back. • Keep the certificate for 6 years. • If your condition is long-term, look at CPP disability benefits too.
